Music in every room you want it
Most multi-room audio briefs start with a single moment. Kitchen radio in the morning that follows you onto the terrace. A playlist that plays in the bath without dragging a speaker in from the bedroom. Sound that runs the length of a Sunday lunch from the dining table to the snug. Once you have lived with that, it is hard to go back to Bluetooth.
Standalone wireless speakers and phone-tethered systems work, up to a point. They start to fall over as soon as you want a household-wide grouping, even volume across rooms, or guests joining the system without setting up an account. That is when properly designed multi-room audio earns its keep.
Choosing the right platform: Bluesound, Sonos and matrix amplifiers
Bluesound is our main multi-room platform. Built on BluOS by Lenbrook, the family behind NAD and PSB, it is the right call when music is the heart of the brief. Hi-resolution and lossless streaming, deep service support, and a control app that takes the same care over a kitchen zone as it does over a serious listening room. We pair Bluesound with architectural in-ceiling speakers for permanent zones, and with traditional stereo amplification where there is hi-fi to preserve.
Sonos is the right call when ease of use is the priority. Easy to live with, easy to expand, easy to hand over to anyone in the household. We use Sonos Amp with architectural in-ceiling speakers for permanent zones, and Sonos units in rooms that should stay flexible. Sonos and Bluesound co-exist happily; we often run one platform per audience in a household so the right interface is in front of the right person.
For the speakers themselves we lead with Origin Acoustics. Their in-ceiling and in-wall architectural ranges sit flush, paint over without losing performance, and have proper acoustic engineering behind them rather than budget hardware in a flush bezel. Origin partners cleanly with both Bluesound and Sonos and is what we specify by default for permanent zones in homes worth doing well.
For larger homes and commercial sites, matrix amplifiers are the cleaner answer. One rack-mounted amplifier drives many zones, each independently controlled, with the speaker cabling running back to a central point rather than to a streaming amp in every cupboard. It costs more on day one and less to expand later.
In-ceiling speakers, done properly
In-ceiling speakers are the most asked-for option and the most often badly installed. Three things tend to go wrong.
Placement. Too far apart and the music sounds patchy. Too close to walls and it sounds boxy. We mark positions from the speaker spec, not from where the joists happen to fall.
Fire hoods. Any in-ceiling speaker fitted below a habitable room needs a fire hood to maintain the ceiling fire rating. It is a building regulations requirement, and one that DIY installs routinely skip. We fit them as standard.
The ceiling itself. In lath and plaster ceilings, especially listed ones, you cannot just cut a hole. We use the access points the building already has, and where we need new openings we agree them with you and any conservation contact before we start.
Outdoor and garden audio
Scottish weather puts most outdoor speakers through a test they were not designed for. We specify IP-rated speakers that can live outside year-round, on cabling that does not corrode in winter. Typical outdoor zones include the terrace, the lawn area near the house, courtyards, and built-in gazebos. We keep volumes neighbour-friendly by default and run all outdoor zones on a curfew if you want one.
Controlling music without thinking about it
The control surface matters as much as the speakers. We set up phone control for everyone in the household, wall-mounted keypads in the rooms where they make sense (usually kitchen, master bedroom, gym), and voice control for the rooms where it is genuinely useful.
Then we set up presets. "Morning kitchen" plays Radio 4 in the kitchen and a quieter playlist in the master en-suite. "Dinner" plays jazz across the ground floor at a sensible volume. "Garden" follows you outside without you having to think about it. These are written with you during handover and tuned at the follow-up.

Will the system work with my existing Sonos kit?
Yes. We can build around your existing Sonos units and add architectural zones, outdoor zones and proper controls without replacing what already works.
Can you fit speakers in lath and plaster ceilings?
In most cases yes. We agree positions and access carefully in period ceilings and use fire hoods as standard. In listed buildings we agree any new openings with the conservation contact.
Do I need cabling in every room?
For permanent in-ceiling zones, yes. For flexible rooms we use Sonos units that need only power and Wi-Fi.
How loud can in-ceiling speakers really go?
Loud enough for almost any home use. Specifying the right driver size and amplifier matters more than the headline wattage on the box.
Can we add rooms later?
Yes. We design the system so adding a zone in two years is a one-day job, not a rip-out.
