Why home CCTV needs to be designed, not bought
Most home CCTV systems are sold as a kit of four cameras and a recorder for under £500. They work, in the sense that they record video. They are also the reason a lot of homeowners eventually call us, frustrated that the footage is unusable, the alerts are pointless, and the cameras are pointing at the wrong things.
Good CCTV is a design exercise before it is a product choice. Where the cameras go, how they are angled, what they see during the day and what they see at night, how they record, what triggers an alert, what does not. Get all of that right and the system does its job in the background. Get any of it wrong and you have an expensive doorbell.
Where to place cameras that actually help
The doors people actually use. The paths between cars and the house. The bin store, the side return, the garden gate. The outbuildings if they hold anything of value. Approaches and entry points are far more useful to cover than the middle of the front lawn.
We deliberately do not over-camera. Six well-placed cameras give you more useful coverage than twelve poorly placed ones, and far fewer false alerts. We talk through the placement on a walk around the property before quoting.
4K cameras, on-site recording, smart alerts
4K matters for evidence. The difference between a 1080p face you cannot identify and a 4K face that police can use is real. We specify 4K as standard now, with the bandwidth and recording capacity to match. Dahua and Lilin are our two go-to manufacturers, with Luma as an alternative for residential briefs that want the softer, more residential aesthetic.
Recording stays on your premises by default. We install network video recorders with enough storage for thirty days or more, so footage is not living on someone else's server unless you specifically want cloud backup too. You own the recordings.
Smart alerts are the thing that makes CCTV liveable. Person and vehicle detection so the dog and the postman do not wake you up. Custom zones so a delivery to the front step is logged but a car passing on the road is ignored. Mobile alerts that actually mean something when they arrive.
CCTV for hospitality and short lets
Short lets and hospitality have specific requirements: guest expectations, insurance, licensing, and GDPR all bear on the design. We cover common spaces and approaches without invading private guest areas. Recording retention is set to what your insurer and licence require, no more. Footage is locked down so only authorised people can access it.
Where access control is also in place, we tie CCTV events to lock events. A door opening produces a clip; an attempted entry produces an alert; a recurring guest pattern shows up in a single timeline. That is genuinely useful for operators, not just security theatre.
CCTV in listed and period homes
Period properties need careful mounting. Cameras should not be drilled into carved stone, blocking sightlines from listed windows, or routed through cabling that breaches consent. We use mortar-joint mounting where possible, agree positions with the conservation contact, and stay reversible.
Where wired cabling is impossible, we use properly engineered wireless cameras with their own power. They are not the first answer, but they are a clean answer in the right places.
Frequently asked questions
Is cloud or on-site recording better?
On-site is our default. You own the footage, bandwidth stays sensible, and you are not dependent on a subscription. Cloud is a useful backup layer for some clients but not the primary recording.
Can cameras work in the dark?
Yes. We specify cameras with proper low-light performance and infrared illuminators sized for the area they cover. Some sites benefit from low-level lighting that helps the cameras and acts as a deterrent at the same time.
What about my neighbours' privacy?
We design coverage to your boundary and we use privacy masks to exclude neighbouring property from the recording. We can show you exactly what the cameras see and what they do not.
Is the footage admissible if something happens?
4K recording from a properly configured NVR with accurate time stamps is admissible. We provide a handover document covering the system spec for insurance and legal records.
Do you support and maintain the system after install?
Yes. We monitor the systems we install and provide same-day support.* Cameras and drives need occasional attention, and we include that in our care plans.
