The UK smart lock problem
Most "best smart lock" lists are written for the US market. The locks they recommend are deadbolts. British front doors mostly are not deadbolts; they are multi-point locks, often heavy timber, often on doors that have been hanging in the same frame for a hundred years. A retail smart lock that snaps onto a US deadbolt will not fit a Scottish front door, and forcing it in damages both the door and the lock.
Smart access on a British home is therefore a fitting question first and a brand question second. The lock body, the cylinder, the strike plate and the door itself all need to be compatible. We survey the door before quoting, because we have lost count of the homeowners who bought a smart lock online and ended up with a bag of unusable components.
Smart locks that fit Edinburgh front doors
For most homes we recommend Yale or Salto smart locks. Both are fitted to existing or replacement multi-point cylinders, both work in heavy timber doors, both keep the look of the door without obvious smart-lock styling.
For architectural doors and listed properties we use specialist multi-point smart locks from Banham, Salto and similar. They cost more, they need a specialist fit, and they preserve the look of the original door. Worth every penny on the right property.
Where a smart lock is genuinely the wrong answer (very period doors, narrow stiles, security-rated doors that do not take aftermarket hardware), we will tell you. Smart keypad readers wired to an existing magnetic lock sometimes solve the brief better.
Video intercoms
Video intercoms are often more important than the lock itself. They let you see and speak to whoever is at the gate or front door from your phone, a wall screen, or both, wherever you are in the world.
We use 2N for door stations. 2N have door station options that match different building styles, from modern brushed stainless to powder-coated bronze for period properties. Indoor units can be wall touchscreens or simply your phone, depending on how you want to use the system.
Codes, schedules and audit logs
This is where smart access earns its keep for hospitality and short let operators. Cleaners get a code that works between 10am and 2pm on cleaning days. Contractors get a code that expires the day the job ends. Short let guests get a code that lives from check-in to check-out, generated automatically when the booking is confirmed and revoked when they leave.
Every event is logged: who entered, when, with which code. If something goes wrong, you have a record. If something just needs auditing for insurance or operations, you have a record.
We integrate with Airbnb, Booking.com, Hostfully, Uplisting and most of the major property management platforms, so the codes generate themselves rather than being a manual job.
Tying access into the rest of the home
The arrival routine is one of the things that makes a smart home feel finished. Front door unlocks, hallway lights come on, alarm disarms, the kitchen radio comes back on. The departure routine reverses it.
Where there is CCTV, an access event produces a clip. Where there is lighting, the right scene runs. Where there is audio, your music follows you in. None of this happens by accident. It is designed and tuned during handover so it feels right rather than gimmicky.

Will this work with my existing locks?
In some cases yes, in others we replace the cylinder or the lock body. We survey the door before quoting.
Can I still use a physical key?
Yes. Every smart lock we fit keeps a physical key as a backup, including for emergency services where required.
What happens in a power cut?
Locks fail to a secure state. Most of our installs include a small uninterruptible power supply for the door station and the smart hub so they keep working through short outages.
Is this secure enough for insurance?
Yes. The locks we specify are insurance-rated. We can supply a written specification for your insurer if needed.
Can guests still get in if their phone dies?
Yes. Short let guests get a numeric code as standard, not just an app, so a dead phone never means a locked-out guest.
